History
Sept-Îles, December 15, 2004. Tshiuetin Rail Transportation, the first ever railway owned by Aboriginal people–”the Montagnais” from Uashat mak Mani-Utenam and Matimekoch/Lac John as well as “the Naskapis” from Kawawachicamach–will launch its operations December 1, 2005.
Tshiuetin Rail Transportation is determined to offer its customers high quality services. “We want to provide up to two safe and comfortable passenger train services per week. To meet this objective, we purchased new equipment, improved safety measures and ensured compliance with federal regulations”.
Increased media coverage of the new company will help the public better understand what Tshiuetin Rail Transport really stands for. “The train will reflect the people who use it, as well as the people who work for it. Aboriginal people are proud of their culture and heritage. I have no doubt they will do their best to ensure the efficient operation of the company–their company,”.
“This large project will be an important new asset for the First Nations, while benefiting the regional economy. This represents an added value for Tshiuetin Rail Transportation’s key objective, which is to provide the population of Schefferville with a rail service respectful of Amerindian culture”.
